The Heroes & Villains Come Out To Play

FREE COMIC DAY: BRINGING THE
COMMUNITY TOGETHER

Photography by Arizona Groove Staff
Tucson’s very own Superheroes came out to play for the worldwide Free Comic Book Day held the 1st Saturday in May every year. Dressed in normal street clothes to Star War characters Arizonians came out to save the world one toy at a time at Heroes and Villains Comics to help support The 501ST LEGION TOY DRIVE an international organization that collects toys for University Medical Center, Tucson Medical Center and the Phoenix Children’s Hospital. With big smiles and great Star War costumes the organization greeted Heroes and Villains customers with a smile and a free photo for just showing up!
Once inside we found customers lined up for the array of free comic books neatly organized on racks against the wall.

While across town people were lined up at R-Galaxy Comics to get their share of free comics and to meet a comic book artists along with a local toy maker! Even with all the craziness, the staff was friendly and very organized as they directed the customers to the free comics and announced a storewide sale too!

Then at Charlie’s Comics, Eisner Award nominee for the Spirit of Comics Retailer Award store they brought out local comic book artists and publishers to show off their mad skills all day! Beginning with Ash-Tray Comics whose Taylor amazed us with a mad crazy onsite drawing of Batman and the Joker, while John and his very cool girlfriend shared the story behind their comic book series Youth In Asia. The store was buzzing with new comers looking for free comics, new comics and waiting for our local talent to draw them their favorite superhero. The adventure could be felt across Tucson as the customers shared their stories and their own heros with each other. As the day progressed the spirit was friendly as they passed the comics around, talked about the new Iron Man movie and enjoyed the storewide sales together.
Free Comic Book Day turned out to be a day Arizonians could be proud of.
